Abstract

This chapter reviews five cases of repatriation in Asia. The first was the repatriation of Vietnamese nationals after the previous decade of successful resettlement of the Indochinese refugees. The second case focuses on the Bhutanese refugees in Nepal. Bhutan refused to allow their return after the government rescinded their citizenship. In response, the international community finally agreed to resettle the bulk of the refugees. The third case deals with the repatriation to Burma. The government of Burma agreed to repatriate the Rohingas, but this action led to widespread abuse of the refugees. East Timor offers a fourth case which had conducted a successful repatriation. Lastly, Sri Lanka offers a case of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who fled the battle between the government in Colombo and the Tamil Tigers.
