Abstract

Reservation in India has always occupied a centre stage in the political arena of Indian society as part of the world’s largest affirmative action programme for the depressed classes. Keeping aside seats in government jobs and educational institutions, though opposed by many was implemented and the duration extend by subsequent amendments to the Indian Constitution namely the 23rd, 45th, 62nd, 79th and 95th amendments. However reservations in promotions remained another issue altogether. Introduced by the 77th and 85th amendments, there were apprehensions about it from the very beginning. The following research papers aims at discovering what exactly is wrong with this idea and why it fails in its aim of providing social and economic equality.
