Abstract
The Journal of the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka publishes the results of research in all aspects of Science and Technology. The journal also has a website at http://www.nsf.gov.lk/. 2021 Impact Factor: 0.682The JNSF provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.Cover :Leatherback (a), green (b - adult & f - hatchling), hawksbill (c) and olive ridley (d) turtles who nest in Sri Lankan beaches, green turtle crawl marks (e) and by-catch of sea turtles in fisheries (c & d)Photo credits: SJ Perera (a & c), WPN Perera (b & e), K Ekaratne (d & f)
Highlights
In anautogenous mosquitoes, events starting from the intake of a bloodmeal to oviposition are controlled by neuroendocrine mechanisms involving the release of peptide and other hormones.' The digestion of a bloodmeal is followed by the synthesis of yolk proteins in the fatbody
Larvae maintainedin the presence of 0.1 p g/ml reserpine in therearingmedium were sluggish and poor feeders with larval food accumulating in the rearing trays
This effect of reserpine was pronounced in instars 1and 2, but not later in instars 3 and 4; they pupated in 8 days compared to the control larvae which were more active and pupated in 7 days
Summary
Events starting from the intake of a bloodmeal to oviposition are controlled by neuroendocrine mechanisms involving the release of peptide and other hormones.' The digestion of a bloodmeal is followed by the synthesis of yolk proteins in the fatbody. Two hundred and fifty first instar larvae were treated with 200pg of reserpine (Sigma, U.S.A)which was dissolved in 20p1 of acetone and added to larval trays containing 2 1 water (i.e 0.1 pglml) immediately after hatching of eggs and thereafter at 48h intervals throughout the entire larval period until pupation. Reserpine treated and control larval trays were maintained in triplicates.
