Resection of Retroperitoneal Sarcomas Involving the Inferior Vena Cava With the Use of Veno-Veno Extracorporeal Perfusion: A Review of the First 20 Cases Performed at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth, West Australia

Abstract

Prolonged inferior vena cava (IVC) clamping during retroperitoneal sarcoma resection presents specific challenges requiring a multidisciplinary approach. Veno-veno bypass (VVB) drains blood from the IVC and returns it into the right atrium, allowing excellent surgical exposure. This institution has routinely used VVB for sarcoma resections involving the IVC since 2018. This review describes outcomes of the first 20 cases.
