Abstract

Africa is undergoing a remarkable period of transformation. Investment in the continent's universities are among key measures identified to counter negative development scenarios. While there are encouraging indications of improvement in Africa's scientific contribution, there is not always the political recognition that research universities are critical to development. The combination of improved scientific performance and lack of government support raises questions about the actual performance of Africa's research universities: To what degree are universities in Africa 'making a difference' globally? And, are the available data sufficient to address this issue? To answer the questions, we focus on the universities in the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). Following our analysis, we identify several priority areas for further research. We conclude that the global higher education research agenda cannot exclude African higher education in general and its research universities in particular.
