Abstract

ABSTRACT The paper examines some research paradigms and discusses methods and methodologies that may best yield answers in the context of drama and theatre in education. The nature and meaning of research is discussed in relation to drama and theatre studies in South Africa. Research in education is broadly categorized as positivist, interpretive and critical. These categories are related to research described at two international conferences in drama and theatre in education held in 1995. Ethnographic methods are identified as significant in this field and participatory action research (PAR) is discussed in relation to a project for HIV/AIDS and life skills education in KwaZulu-Natal. The paper concludes with some ideas about choosing and applying appropriate research methodologies, and for developing research designs and priorities in South Africa.
