Abstract

Great strides have been made in our observational and theoretical understanding of the magnetotail in the decade between the ISEE 3 and Geotail missions. As the International Solar Terrestrial Physics Program progresses, it is clear that magnetotail physics will be fully incorporated into our overall picture of the geospace as a key element of the solar‐terrestrial coupling. The Chapman Conference on The Earth's Magnetotail: New Perspectives, held in Kanazawa, Japan, November 5–9, 1996, provided a valuable and informative summary of our knowledge of magnetotail processes.
