Abstract

In the past year the researches of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography have, as previously, dealt with problems in physical oceanography, chemistry of sea water, sedimentation, and numerous aspects of the biology of the ocean. Studies have been conducted not only by the regular staff of the Institution, which has remained unaltered, but also by visitors who have spent from a few months to a full year at the Institution.Time and space do not permit a discussion of the many researches within biological fields which are being conducted at the Institution, since emphasis will be placed upon progress within studies which are of direct interest to geophysics. In this place, therefore, it must be sufficient to mention that researches have continued on the bacteria of the sea, phytoplankton, zooplankton, on the biochemistry and physiology of marine organisms, and within fish biology. The Scripps Institution is also engaged in a cooperation with the United States Navy Bureau of Construction and Repair on a study of the organisms which cause fouling growth on ships' bottoms.
