Abstract

Transsynaptic retrograde degeneration of retinal ganglion cells was induced by a lesion in the lateral geniculate nucleus, and/or the visual cortex of occipital lobe. This optic neuropathy is referred to as transsynaptic retrograde degenerating optic neuropathy, and its pathological basis is the apoptosis of P beta retinal ganglion cells. The degenerating extent depends on the age at which visual cortex was damaged, the survival time, the size of the cortical lesion, the binocular interactions and the species.(Int Rev Ophthalmol, 2016, 40: 405-408) Key words: transsynaptic degeneration; retrograde; visual cortex; optic nerve; visual pathway
