Abstract
Stand tending is an essential component in the sustainable development of the forest resource. With ever-increasing demands on our forests and the loss of productive forest land to other uses, intensive management can provide the opportunity to maintain adequate timber supply through short- and long-term gains in the productivity of young established stands. This paper identifies problems in tending these young stands and examines how research can be used to address both present and unforeseen future management concerns.
