Abstract

In a randomised controlled trial, Olivia Okereke and colleagues investigated the potential benefits of vitamin D3 supplementation in the risk of depression in people aged 50 years or older. Participants comprised individuals at risk of recurrent depression and those with no history of depression, and were randomly allocated to the vitamin D3 plus fish oil group (n=9181) or the placebo group (n=9172). During the follow-up period (median 5·3 years [IQR 5·0–5·7 years]), the risk of depression or clinically relevant depressive symptoms did not significantly differ between the vitamin D3 group or placebo group (609 cases vs 625 cases; adjusted hazard ratio 0·97 [95% CI 0·87 to 1·09]; p=0·62).
