Abstract

ANEW US SURVEY REPORTS UNACceptably lowadult immunization rates and a lack of public awareness of the threat of infectious diseases, say public health officials. The most recentNationalImmunizationSurveyfrom the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that while mostindividualsarefamiliarwiththebenefitsof influenzavaccination,theyareunawareof themanyotherdiseases thatare preventable by immunization (http: //www.cdc.gov/nis/). In the United States alone, there are morethan1millioncasesofshingles,more than 6 million new human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, and nearly 10 000 casesofcervicalcancerdetectedannually. Incidence of pertussis also has risen significantly over the past few decades. “As of today, an American adult who followstherecommendedimmunization schedule will be protected against 14 infectiousdiseases,”saidKristinNichol,MD, MPH,of theUniversityofMinnesotaand the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and Medicine,atarecentnewsconferenceheld bytheNationalFoundationforInfectious Diseases.
