Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains a major public health problem and is one of the few chronic diseases that have shown an increase in mortality. Recent years have seen important new information published on COPD, its pathogenesis, systemic effects, exacerbations, and treatment. Now, COPD is defined as a preventable and treatable disease with some significant extrapulmonary effects that may contribute to the severity in individual patients except for its characteristic pulmonary component. This article reviews the definition, diagnosis, staging classification and treatment of COPD. Key words: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; Diagnosis; Treatment
