Abstract

Umbilical cord blood is an important source of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) for patients in need of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Numerous factors make umbilical cord blood a reliable source of HSC, including wide range of sources, ease of procurement, low rate of graft versus host disease(GVHD). However, the low hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HS/PC) dose in banked umbilical cord blood units remains a major limitation. Thus, it usually couldn't meet the needs of children of high body weight and adult who need allo-HSCT. We review studies that focus on the expansion of umbilical cord blood HS/PC and related clinical trials. Key words: Cord blood stem cell transplantation; Hematopoietic stem cells; Cell culture techniques
