Abstract

Bio-based polymers have been applied to packaging, automobiles, electronic appliances and other fields because of their green, environmental-friendly, renewable and biodegradable properties. Some bio-based polymers (such as chitosan, starch, etc.) are gradually used in the flame retardant field due to their good char-forming abilities. These bio-based polymers are mainly introduced into the material by adding and coating methods to give the material good flame retardant properties. In this paper, the research progress of flame retardant coatings made of bio-based polymer materials such as chitosan, starch, DNA and phytic acid, including the composition, coating mode and flame retardant effect of each coating, is reviewed. Moreover, several bio-based functional flame retardant coatings are briefly introduced. Finally, the development trend of bio-based flame retardant coating is prospected.
