Abstract
The normal mucociliary clearance system (MCC) requires not only mucus with optimum of viscoelastic and thickness, but also enough cilia with structural integrity and sufficient cilia beat frequency(CBF). Abnormality of ciliary structure and function, CBF or surface properties of mucus was found in several respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, primary ciliary dyskinesia,cystic fibrosis,etc. Which implies the MCC should be new area for research on treatment of respiratory diseases. The review will focus on the research progress of airway ciliary function and related respiratory diseases. Key words: Cilia; Cilia beat frequency; Mucociliary clearance
