Abstract

Since Raymond Hugh Thomlinson discovered hypoxia in malignant tumors, it has been considered to be one of the main reasons for the tolerance of tumor radiotherapy and chemotherapy, as well as the potential cause of tumor recurrence and metastasis after tumor treatment. In view of the importance of hypoxia in disease progression and treatment resistance of cancer, the relevant research on tumor hypoxia has received extensive attention. With the emergence of nanotechnology, functional nanomaterials have been gradually used as adjuvant agents for oxygen-dependent therapy, or as targeted delivery carriers for drugs against hypoxia tumors. This review systematically introduces the latest research progress of nanomedicine for hypoxic tumor from the aspects of “overcoming hypoxia” and “utilizing hypoxia”, and prospects the development of this field in the future.
