Abstract

The mechanism of the anti-reabsorptive ability of bisphosphonates has been well elucidated and by now bisphosphonates become standard treatment for preventing skeletal complications associated with bone metastases. An increasing number of in vivo and vitro preeJinical trial have indicated that bisphosphonates including zoledronie acid exert anti-tumor effects by inhibiting the proliferation, adhesion and invasion of tumor cells, besides inhibiting angiogensis and modulating immune response. Also evidences of synergistic anti-tumor effects are found when zoledronic acid combines with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Key words: Diphosphonates; Imidazoles; Antineoplastic agents
