Abstract

The present paper intends to develop a method of characteristics applicable to the analysis of transient viscous wave flows in a coaxial double pipe. For this purpose a weight function of which convolution integral with the time derivative of the flow rate gives unsteady wall frictions has properly been found. Application is demonstrated for transient waves in a semi-infinitely long uniform double pipe with the time increment varied. The results for a smaller time increment show better agreement with the ones calculated by the numerical Laplace inversion method which the same authors have previously developed. Furthermore the method of characteristics proves useful when a double pipe has a non-uniform cross-section and the speed of sound varies in the axial direction.
