Abstract

Using smart cities to drive urban innovation and lead China to the forefront of innovative countries is an important issue in the high-quality development stage. Based on the panel data of 285 prefecture-level cities in China from 2006 to 2021, this paper uses the difference-in-difference method to test the net impact of smart cities on urban innovation. The research conclusions show that smart cities have a significant role in promoting urban innovation; smart cities mainly promote urban innovation by innovating information science and technology, gathering high-end human capital, and optimizing the institutional business environment. In the future, through the positive impact of smart cities on urban innovation, fully release the catalytic effect of information technology, human capital, and institutional environment on smart cities to promote urban innovation, and help China to become the forefront of innovative countries.
