Abstract

There are certain laws that govern the propagation of light in brain tissue and these laws can be used to better understand and study the brain. Since the skull has a significant influence on the propagation of light in the brain tissue, it is imperative to study the effects of the skull on the photothermal effects of light incident on the tissue. Different biological tissues have different optical and thermal properties, and this study applied the Monte Carlo method to simulate the propagation path of a large number of photons within the brain tissue, and FEM (Finite Element Method) to calculate the absorption of energy by each unit of light. MCmatlab is an open-source MATLAB program based on the Monte Carlo method and FEM. MCmatlab is capable of simulating the propagation of photons in different tissues and calculating the energy absorption of those tissues. In addition, it can generate 3D model diagrams to visualize the results. In this study, MCmatlab was used to construct the photothermal model of mouse brain. We examined the effects of incident light on the mouse brain with and without the skull to determine the effect of the skull on the photothermal effects on the mouse brain.
