Abstract

The geometrical characteristics of abrasive grain play an important role in the topography of grinding wheel. Considering the irregular geometry, inconsistent size of abrasive grains and their random distribution on the grinding wheel surface, Irregular polyhedral abrasive grain was modeled by the method of cutting cubic entity with random plane. Firstly, A constraint grid method was proposed to realize the random space distribution of abrasive grains. Then the simulation model of grinding wheel topography was built and the grinding process was simulated by Fluid-Solid-Interaction Method. At last, the chip mechanism of single abrasive grain and generating mechanism of workpiece surface were analyzed. Results show that the cutting action of abrasive grain and deformation of workpiece can be simulated accurately. The modeling method of grinding wheel topography proposed in the paper is valid, and the wheel topography model is important and helpful to analyze and predict grinding processes.
