Abstract

The laboratory test of soil arch between the cantilever-piles showed that the critical load of the horizontal arch is the damage value of arch foot. Under the condition of reasonable pile spacing, the soil under uniform thrust, the arch formed in horizontal plane, arch axis is parabola, according to the force equilibrium of arch foot and geometric relations of limit equilibrium of soil, the expression of the critical load is concluded, based on the Rankine’s earth pressure theory, this paper draw a expression of the maximum height of cantilever-piles, and study on the relations between arch height and pile spacing. the results show that the arch height increases with the increase of the internal friction angle of soil, when the angle is bigger than 20 ‐ , arch height will increase rapidly, when the angle is smaller than 5 ‐ , its rate of change changed little, the other result is that the arch height has nothing to do with the cohesive force of soil.
