Abstract

Spatial Information Grid (SIG) can share spatial data and computing resources with users from different fields. But there are some semantic problems in SIG. The solutions of these problems face great challenges. Among all the resolutions of semantic problem, Semantic Ontology appears more suitable to solve these semantic problems in SIG. To address the challenges, this paper proposes and analyzes the key problems of ontology application in SIG, and also gives the solutions of each problem. In order to show the effect of geographical ontology and verify that the ontology application in SIG is necessary and feasible, we design and realize a prototype of spatial data query based on ontology. Through the demonstration and comparison with traditional query methods, we can get prospective results and find latent capability of ontology in SIG.
