Abstract

The alloys of the magnesium-iridium system between 0 and 75 wt.% Ir have been studied. They were subjected to chemical analysis, specific gravity determination, X-ray and micrographic examinations and, partially, to thermal analysis. In the range of composition already mentioned the existence is deduced of an eutectic point (3.2 at.% Ir and 615°C) and of at least three phases, for two of which, the ζ-phase (solid solution region having a composition such as Mg 7.5Ir) and δ-phase (corresponding to the Mg 3Ir compound), the main structural characteristics have been determined. The structural data of Mg 3Ir (hexagonal, Na 3As type) are compared with those of the similar compounds of magnesium with other noble metals and are briefly discussed.
