Abstract

ABSTRACT Recreation professionals, social workers, and sheltered workshop personnel recognize the need for effective leisure education programs with handicapped individuals. Unfortunately, individuals labeled as mentally retarded do not always display the appropriate level or knowledge of recreation skills necessary for independent participation. This research study is intended to report information comparing different teaching methods for introducing a new leisure activity to adults labeled as mentally retarded. It was hypothesized that: 1) All of the participants will demonstrate positive changes in their skill level following practice or exposure to a teaching method with practice; and 2) The group receiving the part method of instruction with scheduled practice will significantly improve their skilled ability for completing the objective of the game.
