Abstract

We are interested in developing tactile communication displays for use by the profoundly deaf and the deaf blind. The approach we are taking involves a laboratory-based comparative study of various spectral and articulatory display schemes, including the Tadoma method of speech reading. We will conduct an informal discussion of issues related to our research, and in particular, to fundamental problems concerned with the choice of display schemes and the choice of training procedures. Examples of the types of questions that we intend to address are the following: (1) Is there any tactile display that can provide good speech communication? (2) What are the advantages and disadvantages of articulatory displays relative to spectral displays ? (3) How well can one estimate the ultimate potential of a given tactile display on the basis of experiments that involve only limited, laboratory-type training in the use of the display?
