Abstract

This paper discussed the basic calculation method for the electric-field distribution of the flexible DC modeling insulation submarine cable. The temperature and electric field analysis models were established by using COMSOL, and the value of insulation thickness was obtained. First of all, through the electric field simulation with both the conditions of no-load and full load, the insulation thickness of 15.5mm was determined preliminarily. Meanwhile, electro thermal coupling model was built to check the currentcarrying capacity and insulation strength combined with the laying conditions. The results showed, that the maximum field strength was 12.7kV/mm, which was lower than the design value of 15kV/mm, and it was satisfied the design requirements. The 160kV DC submarine cable based on this research was used and verified in projects.
