Abstract

The added mass of a vibrating plate in a fluid reduces the natural frequency of the plate in comparison with that in the air. The ratio of the former to the latter is affected by the disc thickness, the liquid density and a hole in the disc. In this research, two kinds of discs, 2.05 mm and 3.05 mm in thickness, and four kinds of liquids, 0.858, 0.890, 0.965, 1.000×103 kg/m3 in density, are provided to clarify their influences. In the experimental results, the values of the nondimensional formula, which contains disc thickness or liquid density, are almost the same at and below 0.33 in the ratio of the liquid depth to the diameter of the disc for the modes with a free surface. The effect of a circular hole at the center is very small, provided the area ratio of the hole to the plate without a hole is smaller than 0.0178.
