Abstract

The mode switching of DC microgrids from grid-connected mode to islanded mode can lead to serious dynamic power deficiency and DC bus voltage transient processes. The superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES)-battery hybrid energy storage system (HESS) with multi-mode model predictive control (MPC) is proposed in this paper. Three cost functions of MPC are designed for different control modes of HESS according to the DC bus signaling. The simulation comparison results show that the proposed control method can improve the dynamic and static control performance, thus stabilize the DC bus voltage level in both grid-connected mode and mode switching process.
