Abstract

During the failure free operating period (FFOP), products have ZERO FAILURE and not unscheduled maintenance. Comparing with the traditional reliability measurement of mean time between failures (MTBF), the concept of FFOP abandons the hypothesis of random failure. Firstly, the essential features of FFOP are expounded; then a powerful equation is derived for setting quantitative reliability requirements based on FFOP. The equation is applied to the case where failure is triggered because of clustering of two or more failures following a Homogeneous Poisson process. Furthermore, the equation is used to predict the FFOP of the wireless pulse generator, which is a critical equipment of drilling platform and requires a continuous FFOP. Finally, the prediction result through the proposed method is compared with the result through Monte Carlo method and both results are close, which shows that the developed method is practical in engineering.
