Abstract

Due to the complex fault transients associated with DC convergence in photovoltaic (PV) plants and the large number of power electronics used in systems, the protection device is unable to determine the location of faults, and thus the protection is inadequate. This paper proposes a protection scheme for the DC system of a large PV plant. The accurate model of the PV plant is built in consideration of the DC system, including the current limiter. The differential voltage and current are utilized to realize the location of the fault section. The voltage transients are used to locate the fault within the section accurately. Study cases in PSCAD/EMTDC show the proposed protection scheme is effective and practically useful for PV plants.
