Abstract
Abstract The crystal growth and defects in cubic zirconia grown by the skull melting method have been investigated. The distribution coefficients of stabilizers Y 2 O 3 and CaO in the crystal were greater than 1 and less than 1 respectively. By preparing materials with 10–12 mol% Y 2 O 3 as stabilizer, it is easy to get nearly colourless transparent large cubic zirconia single crystals. The substances which influence the uniformity of the cubic zirconia crystal are not only the inclusions, but also growth striae and mosaics. The results of the observation and analysis on the inclusions by scanning electron microscopy, show that Si, Ca, Mg, Y, etc. occur mainly at the ends and in the centre of the crystal.
