Abstract

Comparing with the IEEE 802.11 DCF mechanism, IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function (EDCF) mechanism has been improved in many aspects for the increasing of the Quality of Service (QoS) in wireless networks. But there are still a few problems to be settled down in IEEE 802.11e EDCF backoff mechanism in which the transmission fairness should be improved further more. In this paper, we introduced a new algorithm that combined the algorithms of SD, MILD and FCR which may be named as SMFCR and it has been applied in the IEEE802.11e EDCF mechanism. By comparing the simulation results between EDCF and Improved EDCF, we find that, although the improved EDCF leads to a certain drop in the total network throughput, it has a great improvement in the aspect of fairness.
