Research of Natural Lip Colour and Preferred Lip Colour

Abstract

Lip is an important character of the face. Many previous researches studied the colour of the lip. They found the lip colour and perception of the face healthy and attractiveness have significant connection. The lip colour, as a key feature, are widely interested by the cosmetic industry and imaging industry, especially the preferred lip colour. In this study, the natural colour of the lips and the preferred colour of the lips were investigated to further quantify preferred lip colour. The natural lip colour gamut has small variation in chroma. The lightness was darker than the average skin colour of the same ethnicities. A psychophysics experiment was carried out to determine the colour properties of this preference. Fifty participants’ data were collected. The result shows that the lip colour that with similar hue angle to the natural lip were preferred.
