Abstract

Staplers have been widely utilized in clinical treatments. In this study, we have developed degradable anastomosis staples using Mg-5Zn wires with a diameter of 0.23 mm. The microstructure and mechanical properties of wires treated with various annealing processes were investigated and a correlation between grain size and yield strength was established. The wire treated at 175 °C for 1hr had the best comprehensive mechanical properties. Furthermore, the degradation tests demonstrated that Mg-5Zn staples in vitro tended to degrade uniformly in SCF, and their efficacy remained stable even after ten days. These results indicate that Mg-5Zn alloy is a promising candidate for the degradable colonic staple material.
