Abstract

After a prolonged period of time between treatments (e.g. weekends) dental treatment units sometimes show considerable microbiological contamination of the water. The half-life of ozone and hydrogen peroxide - silver ion solutions in water is too short to be effective for several days. A measurable amount of contamination is still present on Monday afternoon depending on how much the individual instruments are used. For this reason the water standing in the dental unit should be allowed to drain off after every weekend and possibly even daily. A basic disinfection with highly concentrated peroxide does not guarantee any microbiological long-term success.
