Abstract

Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRA) was used to estimate in vitro digestible energy (IVDE) values in complete poultry feeds. Seventy-one feeds were used in the study ranging in IVDE values from 2.370 to 3.505 kcal/g. The NIRA calibrations were developed using filter and scanning spectrophotometers. Different mathematical treatments of the spectra were employed before selecting the NIRA equations. The accuracy of the predictions were assessed by the standard error of the estimate (SEE). The results of applying NIRA to estimate IVDE showed SEE values that ranged from .124 to .138 kcal/g. The best prediction equation was obtained with a filter instrument using two wavelengths. The results of the present study indicated that NIRA can be used to estimate IVDE in poultry feeds.
