Abstract

Three peat sizes and wood shavings were compared as litter for market turkeys. Body weights for male and female turkeys raised on the small size peat (1 to 4 cm3) and wood shavings litters were similar throughout the study. Turkeys (males) raised on large-sized peat litter (4 to 7 cm3) were nonsignificantly lighter at 20 weeks of age (P = .13) and showed increased incidence of swollen foot pads (P<.05) in comparison to those raised on small peat and wood shavings litter. Litter moisture content, turkey necropsy findings, and mortality were similar among treatments.
