Research management in higher education: overview and conclusion of a debate

Abstract

This conclusion and overview is, at one and the same time, a summary and a synthesis of the major points, which the analysis of national—or regional—research systems brought forth. It sets out various suggestions for future activities. It does not, however, rehearse the substantive points broached by the main presentations for the obvious reason that since they form the corpus of this issue of Higher Education Policy, there is no need to repeat them. Bis repetitur non placet. Rather it will concentrate on the major points that emerged from the discussion these papers generated. In particular, it will focus on those which by common agreement, open up issues that lend themselves to closer scrutiny and operational treatment in the second phase of the Research Management Forum.
