Abstract
Decades of investments in infrastructure for research and training of graduate students in Brazil have placed the country in a relatively prominent position in the production of papers, though the visibility and impact of Brazilian papers are still modest. In this viewpoint paper, a short description of the evolution of Brazilian science is presented, in addition to a critical analysis of its strengths and limitations, with a view of the required actions for improving quality and impact. Special emphasis is given to physical chemistry and its relationships to other areas of chemical sciences in the country.
