Amerindian Religious Reactions to Cultural Impact IN a study of the ghost dance, which appeared among the Indians of Oregon and California in 1870, Cora Du Bois points out that it is a minor phase of a recurrent series of Messianic or revivalistic movements which have arisen among the weaker peoples throughout the world as reactionary waves to the crushing impact of European culture (Anthrop.
