Abstract

Abstract The study of living conditions in Norway has no tradition as an historical research discipline in its own right. Nevertheless living conditions have not insignificant antecedents as a subject of research within the framework of other historical specialisms such as economic, social or demographic history. It is a common feature of these disciplines that they deal only with parts of the very broad field of study which we would today regard as being comprised by research into living conditions. It extends from employment, working conditions, wages and education to housing, nutrition, clothing, hygiene, leisure time and social security.1
