Abstract

The nature of communication through the use of sign language is of growing interest to educators, psychologists, and linguists. For example: 1. in California, Nevada, and Oklahoma, psychologists are exploring the ways and means by which primates communicate with each other, and with humans, after they have been taught sign language; 2. in Washington, D.C., and La Jolla, California, linguists are in the process of describing the grammar of a unique language, American Sign Language; 3. at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) the use of a sign language interpreter in regular classes offers an exciting alternative model of educating deaf college students.
