Abstract

Urban information systems in Japan are expected to undergo some dramatic changes as a result of recent and ongoing research and development efforts. Yet, most municipal governments might be characterized currently as only having completed the automation of their massdata processing operations. A few municipalities, usually the largest, use computers for forecasting and planning or for management control. It is this gap in the realization of the potential of computerized urban information systems to assist municipalities that is fueling current Japanese efforts to develop and diffuse more advanced applications of computers and to experiment with unusual concepts such as total community information networks.
