Abstract

Results from the Football Fans in Training (FFIT) randomised controlled study suggest that gender-sensitised approaches to weight loss in men can be effective. 747 male football fans (BMI ≥28 kg/m2) from 13 Scottish professional football clubs were allocated to a weight loss programme or control. The weight loss programme was delivered weekly by club community coaches at the football club for 12 weeks. About 90% of men remained in the study at 12 months, at which point the intervention group had lost more weight than the control group (5·56 kg vs 0·58 kg; mean adjusted difference 4·94 kg, 95% CI 3·95–5·94).
