Abstract

Background: As the largest funding agency of natural science of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has made great efforts in promoting the development of respiratory field research in recent years. The aim of this study is to summarize the respiratory research in China by analyzing NSFC-funded projects. Methods: Data on all projects in the respiratory field funded by NSFC from 2015 to 2019 were collected. This article used statistical methods combined with python language and R language to analyze NSFC for the respiratory field from overall situation, fund distribution, researchers, major funds, hot spots and cluster analysis. Findings: The results show that the proportion of NSFC in respiratory field had increased year by year, and the distribution of diseases focused on Asthma, Pulmonary Circulation and Vascular Diseases, ALI and ARDS, COPD, Respiratory Inflammation & Infection. We also analyzed and summarized the respiratory research hot spots and trends, and pointed out the basic research directions in the future. Interpretation: We developed a deep mining method to quantify NSFC respiratory projects analysis based on python language and R language of programming language. The results presents the development and dynamic changes in the past five years, which can potentially be of significant aid and decision-making for future development. Funding Statement: This work was supported by the National Science Foundation for Young Scientists of China [81300030], the General Program [81570336], General Program [82071569].
