Abstract

A program for providing undergraduate students with experience in agronomic research was initiated by the author in 1974. Students work full-time on the soybean breeding project during one quarter and part-time during the remainder of one academic year. University credits and monetary income are earned. The program has provided insight into methods research agronomists can use to carry out their activities while broadening the experience of undergraduate students. The key factors are recruiting competent students who can benefit from the research experience, devoting a portion of their work schedule to instruction by the research agronomist, and arranging for the student to carry out activities that may qualify for college credit.
