Abstract

Research ethics is conventionally taught by first introducing the research principles of beneficinefe, malificence, autonomy and distributive justice, followed by discussion on cases, or with the cases that are discused to highlight the principles. This report is of a workshop approach taken to teach research ethics in a short course on epidemiology, Biostats, and Surveillance at Aga Khan University, karachi. Relationship between the reseracher and the 'other' was first explored to identify what would make this encounter ethical. After this exploration, the principles of ethics were introduced to be able to further examine the ethics of the encounter between the researcher and the 'other'.
