Abstract
The FORCE11 Scholarly Communication Institute (FSCI), held July 28 through August 3, 2018, was an intensive weeklong summer school, tackling essential but often overlooked elements of the research information life cycle. Featuring a mix of librarians, scientists, data specialists, and other professionals, FSCI offered a remarkable educational experience as well as fertile ground for networking. Classes on research information management (RIM) infrastructure, detection of questionable journal publishing practices, and analysis of article processing charges (APCs) gave participants a deeper understanding of the research information life cycle in addition to hands-on skills in data analysis and visualization. For librarians, these takeaways add valuable context to serials and licensing work and highlight new directions for library skill building and visioning.
